Drake’s New Album is Titled “Views From the 6”: Dope, Wack or Eh?
Why does anyone care about album titles? Doesn't the album sound the exact same, no matter what the title is?
Trick question, of course it fucking matters. Whether it's a movie, book, song or album, artists spend days, if not months and years, thinking of the perfect title. Would "Star Wars" have been nearly as popular if it was titled "Luke, I Am Your Father"? "Ready to Die" sounds so dope I'd like to believe it'd be a classic regardless, but that title, coming shortly before Biggie's death, was so perfect in so many ways it helped cement that album's untouchable legend status.
My favorite drug-dealing rapper of the moment is naming his album "Oxymoron"? I don't need to hear a track, I'm in. Robin Thicke's upcoming album is "Paula"? I guarantee that's going to flop; regardless of the music, who wants to buy an album from someone douche-baggy enough to turn a divorce into a marketing plan? (Answer: no one.)
So yes, of course it's way too early to deliver an official verdict on whether Drake chose wisely in titling his upcoming album, "Views from the 6," but it's not too early to start talking about it. We're talking the only rapper alive under 30 years old who had a legit shot at going platinum first week, so yeah, as we've already established, it actually is kind of a big deal.
Generally speaking, I'd consider Drake a pretty good album-titler. "Thank Me Later" was a bold move for a young, much hyped-artist declaring he had already moved beyond any doubt. "Take Care" was appropriately soft and gentle for an album that featured this. "Nothing Was the Same" was a bid for truly elite status, someone who could not just drop a hot album, but change the sound of music.
And "Views From the 6"? Time will probably reveal the title's deeper meaning, but my best guess is it's got something to do with Toronto. So...an album aimed at portraying Drizzy as a superstar returning back home as a conquering hero (Rap Game Lebron).
Only time will tell if he made the right call, but for now, I'm in on "Views From the 6" - I just said "You know, 'Views From the 6' is pretty dope" out loud, and it sounded pretty good, which is the ultimate test.
Personally, I would have picked "The Kitten Whisperer" for an album title, but that's just me. Let's see what the rest of DJBooth Nation has to say....
