Several hours after learning she received not one, but two GRAMMY nominations, I received a text message from Rapsody.

"Man, I'm speechless," she wrote. "I couldn't wrap my head around it at first. Just thankful and overjoyed... what a journey."

For the First Lady of Jamla Records, that journey began more than seven years ago as a part of North Carolina-based hip-hop group Kooley High. Since then, Rapsody has worked with Kendrick Lamar on To Pimp a Butterfly, inked a deal with JAY-Z and Roc Nation, and alongside legendary producer, mentor and label owner, 9th Wonder, worked tirelessly to develop her sound and improve her craft, a mission that culminated in her acclaimed sophomore album, Laila's Wisdom.

While the validation by the Recording Academy is a significant milestone in Rapsody's career, she isn't concerned about taking home a gilded gramophone for the album or Best Rap Song nominee "Sassy."

"I'm just happy to be nominated," she continued. "[It's] a tough list, so whoever wins I'm happy. The culture has good representation! So much good music [was released] this year."

She's right, the culture will be well-represented this coming January when the 60th Annual GRAMMY Awards ceremony takes place at Madison Square Garden; her Roc Nation boss JAY-Z leads the pack with eight total nominations, followed by frequent collaborator Kendrick Lamar with seven.

"Should we win, the Booth is definitely getting a shout out," she wrote.
