Whatever you expect this song to sound like, you're wrong.

When we launched "Holy Shit You Need to Hear This" we wanted to highlight two types of songs. One, songs that were so good they deserved to be put in the ears of everyone we could find. And two, songs whose mere unbelievable existence demanded to be recognized. Rarely, we get both.

Trump Tone, Chief Keef and CeeLo Green's "Violence" is both. Maybe. Certainly the mere fact that a Chief Keef and CeeLo song is a real thing that really exists merits a "Holy Shit," and the more I listen to it, the more I'm convinced it's pretty damn good. Whatever you're expecting this song to sound like before you press play, you're wrong.

Take a listen and then let's count the ways this shit is mind-blowing.

  1. CeeLo is rapping again? And producing? And he's sampling "Electric Avenue"? And he's quoting Cypress Hill's "If I Could Just Kill a Man"? I spent a while looking back at his catalog and unless I'm missing something, this is the closest he's come to just outright rapping in years. Literally years. He's been on his pop/soul/experimental vibe for so long it's easy to forget there was a time when he would viciously murder the mic.
  2. Chief Keef can sound like this? As well as I wish him, I just haven't been motivated to listen to much Chief Keef in the last couple years or so, so there's a real chance he's made a handful of songs lately in this ballpark that I just missed, but even a quick cruise through his recent releases says that this is a real left turn for him.
  3. I also clearly need to go listen to more Tone Trump. While most of the attention around "Violence" will understandably focus on CeeLo and Keef - not only are they the more famous names here, they're the only voices we hear for the first half of the song, which is likely why so many are outright referring to this a Chief Keef song - this is in fact Tone Trump's song. The Philly emcee and CeeLo have been working together regularly lately, and they grabbed Keef for this song, which is set to appear on Trump's upcoming AHKILO EP. See, now that makes much more sense.

CeeLo rapping and producing again, Chief Keef sounding unlike I've ever heard him, the arrival of Tone Trump as a voice to keep an ear on, and all three of those things happened in the same song. Now that's Holy Shit You Need to Hear This.
