In October of 2010, Baltimore native turned L.A. resident Wax made his DJBooth debut with "Music and Liquor." At the time we knew he had potential, and we knew we wanted to support his music on our platform, but nobody in our office would have guessed that nearly six years later Wax would have posted up almost 75 times on our homepage.

Later this week, the rapper/singer/producer will release the third "mixtape" of his career, The Cookout Chronicles, the first since 2011 releases Scrublife (a DJBooth premiere) and Eviction Notice.

"The mixtape was supposed to be a project for the summer, but due to a combination of laziness and just trying to get it right, I was unable to release it until now," Wax told us via e-mail. "I wanted to put it out immediately so at the very least people could have it for Labor Day weekend."

The 15-track album includes guest spots from Jarren Benton and Open Mike Eagle, as well as production from longtime collaborator EOM.

If you've followed Wax's career over the past eight years, from his brief stint at Def Jam to his independent successes with 2013's Continue and 2015's Livin Foul, then you've most likely grown accustomed to his unique combination of amusing, playful bars over mostly laid back production.

That trend will continue on The Cookout Chronicles, as evidenced by the world premiere of the Bossa Nova-inspired "First Love," a chilled out, self-produced single that Wax believes is "one of my best songs ever."

"First Love," like The Cookout Chronicles, will be available for digital purchase on iTunes, but Wax isn't concerned with sales.

"However people listen to music I want it to be available to them," he explained. "If they wanna buy it on iTunes I consider it an act of charity. One which I will accept graciously."

If this first taste of TCC has your ears growling for more, you won't have to wait for long -- the project is due out this Friday, September 2.
