Yung Berg Says Jeremih is the “Most Prolific Songwriter Right Now,” But He’s Not

If Berg's outrageous declaration sounds insane... that's because it is.

Yung Berg would like to be remembered for "Sexy Lady," his debut single which eventually rose to No. 18 on the Billboard Hot 100, "The Business," which only reached as high as No. 33 but eventually earned him a Gold plaque, and "Sexy Can I," his Platinum-certified collaboration with Ray J that peaked at No. 3 and spent three months in the Top 10. Unfortunately, the 31-year-old Chicagoan is most commonly remembered as the rapper whose Transformers chain was jacked by Detroit veteran Trick-Trick.

Over the last six years, Berg has tried to distance himself from his successful yet controversial introduction to the rap game, writing and producing big records for Big Sean, Jason Derulo, Kid Ink, Nicki Minaj and countless others, and working closely with fellow Chi-Town native Jeremih.

On Thursday (January 12), Berg was a guest on The Breakfast Club, where he discussed his come up in the industry and his impressive behind-the-scenes resume and made a bold claim about his "business partner."

"Jeremih is the most prolific songwriter right now of our time, in my opinion."

If Berg's outrageous declaration sounds insane... that's because it is.

With all due respect to Jeremih, who over the course of his nine-year career has earned eight Platinum plaques and four Gold plaques for singles he personally wrote on, his credentials as a songwriter don't stack up when placed side by side with Swedish songwriter and record producer Max Martin.

Since 1999, 22 Martin-penned records have reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart—he trails only Paul McCartney (32) and John Lennon (26) for the third-most No. 1 songwriting credits all-time—and another 43 have charted in the Top 10. In total, Max Martin is responsible for helping to craft 65 hit records over the course of his 18-year career. Damn.

Jeremih, whose career took off following the 2008 release of "Birthday Sex" and includes five Top 20 records, has never reached No. 1.

Here is a complete list of every song he's written that has peaked in the Top 20:

  • 2009: Jeremih "Birthday Sex (No. 4)
  • 2011: Jeremih "Down on Me" (No. 4)
  • 2013: Kid Ink "Show Me" (ft. Chris Brown) (No. 13)
  • 2014: Jeremih "Don't Tell 'Em" (ft. YG) (No. 6)
  • 2015: Jeremih "Oui" (No. 19)

Berg went on to reveal that Jeremih has a new project done and in the can—which includes a single featuring both Chris Brown and Big Sean—that the pair worked on together. At only 29 years old, Jeremih has plenty of years to catch up to the likes of Martin. While he might not be the most "prolific" songwriter of our time, his growing credentials certainly speak for themselves.
