Streaming platform SoundCloud, which is currently bleeding money and might run out of cash in 2017, has spent the better part of the last two years looking to be acquired. While DJs and electronic artists—once the foundation of the Berlin-based service—have fled SoundCloud en masse over the past 365 days, citing intense copyright restrictions infringing on their creativity, rap artists continue to heavily utilize the platform.

Not that we needed confirmation, but on Thursday (January 19), SoundCloud published a blog, indicating that hip-hop, in fact, ruled in 2016.

According to their data-less report, Chance The Rapper's Coloring Book was the most popular album uploaded to the platform in 2016, racking up a total of 107,950,000 total streams; Desiigner's "Panda" was the most popular individual track uploaded to the platform, garnering 146 million streams; and Lil Uzi Vert finished the year as the most followed artist of 2016, boosting his follower total to 815k.

It's important to keep in mind that after SoundCloud launched their premium, ad-free SoundCloud Go service last March, an attempt to compete with Spotify and Apple Music, new material from the vast majority of hip-hop's most popular artists was only made available to be streamed in full by paid subscribers.

For instance, if you visit Drake's OVO SoundCloud profile, nearly every song he's ever released on the platform is currently only available in 30-second snippet form. Surely, if Views was available in full, it would have far eclipsed the roughly 108 million streams Chance produced for Coloring Book

As for who will rule SoundCloud in 2017, I'm fairly confident it won't be Master P.
