Producer Pi'erre Bourne has had a huge 2017, earning his first top 30, Platinum-certified single for "Magnolia," and it's all thanks to Playboi Carti recording the track over his beat without first asking for his permission.

"I didn't know the nigga did my beat until after the fact. It was on the internet. It was an Akademiks post," Bourne told Mass Appeal in the latest episode of their Open Space series. "I was going to the studio and I saw K$upreme and K$upreme told me, 'Yo, Carti did your beat, I gave him the beat.' I got mad. I was like, 'What the fuck?'"

Bourne had planned to keep that beat for himself, but once he spoke with Carti, they were able to come to an agreement.

"I be big on communication and that's the problem I'm going through right now is, niggas is running off with my beats and dropping songs with no communication," Bourne added. "I don't want that to happen, I want everybody to be on the same page so we can keep this shit going. Once I talked to him, he was on the same page, he was like, 'Pull up to the studio.'"

Unlike most producers in today's hip-hop ecosystem, Bourne isn't comfortable emailing beats to rappers—he prefers to work together in person in the studio—but at least just this once, the end result was a net positive for the 23-year-old.

In addition to working with Carti, the Atlanta-based native of South Carolina also produced 21 Savage's "Baby Girl," found on the rapper's Issa Album, and several records from up-and-coming ATL artist, Young Nudy.
