Later this month, Nicki Minaj's Eminem-assisted single "Roman's Revenge," one of several star-studded tracks from her debut album Pink Friday, will celebrate its seventh anniversary.

Shortly after the song was released, Minaj conducted an interview with MTV News (RIP), during which she revealed that "Roman's Revenge" wasn't the first song she sent to Eminem. "He didn't say, 'I don't love it'; he just said, 'Can you send me something that's a little more me?'" she told the now-defunct outlet.

Eventually, the pair settled on the Swizz Beatz-produced "Roman's Revenge" beat, which gave Minaj the opportunity to fully employ her raucous British alter ego, Roman, which Marshall matched by using his own alter ego, Slim Shady. As it turns out, though, the final product is the result of several rewrites.

"I remember, every time I wrote a verse to 'Roman's Revenge' and sent it to Eminem, he would send a new verse back," Minaj told XXL in an interview for their 20th Anniversary issue. "It was competitive, it was fun. I think all the big male artists (air quotes) also treated me with a sense of respect as an emcee. They took me serious. If they were on a track with me, they knew they had to come hard."

While Eminem has been known to hijack a guest 16 from time-to-time, rewriting a guest verse isn't exactly unprecedented. That said, though hip-hop fans like to mock Minaj these days for the behavior of her die-hard yet annoying fanbase, she has always had the respect of all her male counterparts.

In addition to working with Eminem, as well as labelmates Drake and Lil Wayne, Minaj has worked alongside Kanye West, JAY-Z and Nas, among others.
