After a lengthy delay and several retirement threats, SZA's debut album, Ctrl, was released earlier this year.

Currently, the album holds a score of 86 on Metacritic, meaning it's one of the most acclaimed releases of 2017. According to the artist herself, though, an earlier version of the album was actually better.

“[The album] was probably way better like a year and a half ago,” SZA told the Los Angeles Times. “I sat on it too long and … [messed] it up. I didn’t make a 10 out of 10 album, and I knew I didn’t when I dropped, but I didn’t have any more time to go back in on it.”

In total, SZA recorded more than 200 songs over a two-year period, but after waffling over selections for months, the label confiscated her hard drives and distilled the massive amount of material into the body of work fans have enjoyed since its release on June 9.

While it's hard to believe that an album deemed by her most heralded labelmate as a "masterpiece" could have potentially reached a higher level of appreciation and acclaim, SZA is determined to prove she is capable of much greater.

"The next album is going to be the best I ever made in my life," she told Times reporter Gerrick D. Kennedy.

As for that next album, SZA is currently nearing completion on her follow-up to Ctrl, which includes work with Mark Ronson and Tame Impala. There is currently no release date.
