Without warning, one of Chicago’s most methodical wordsmiths, Mick Jenkins, has delivered a seven-track deep dive into his artistic anxieties.

or more; the anxious is acidic and gritty, and captures the oft-unspoken stresses of being a musician. The tape is nothing if not a slowly developing portrait of Jenkins’ wrought creative process.

Or More is a project series involving musical ideas and concepts that are currently inspiring the album’s creation process,” Jenkins explains. “As creatives we live in a world of time constraints imposed by illusive industry standards, anxious demands of appreciators, or even our own self reflections.”

He continues, “Its [sic] my way of sharing the beauty in Indecisiveness. Sometimes we have to make music to locate the true music within our being.” In that breath, or more is not exactly B-sides so much as it is music dedicated to time and place, and escaping time altogether. Standout track “Layover” is a testament to Jenkins’ hyperfocus on the present, while “Energies” is his attempt to zoom out.

Earlier this month, Mick blasted hip-hop media for an interpretation of "Vampire In Brooklyn," his take on his dealings with one of the "culture vultures" he's encountered in the music industry.

Mick Jenkins isn’t the only Chicagoan delivering a still shot of his creative process. Earlier this year, Closed Sessions signee Kweku Collins released Grey, an EP cataloging his travels and growing pains as an artist. We see both artists using the EP format as a building block for albums to come, and as a platform to communicate their headspace with their fans.

This March, Jenkins promised fans two new projects, one of which was meant to be Another Mickstape. With just over 40 days left in the year, we may not get a second project, but at least we are getting an honest appeal to our ethos in the form of new music.

If or more; the anxious is the cathartic release Mick Jenkins needs to unleash in order to complete his next full-length album, we're all for it.
