Corneille Jumps In The Mix [DJBooth Interview Exclusive]

Posted 7 years ago by
Download DJBooth's new App, The PLUG New York, NY -- has long been bringing music-lovers everywhere exclusive insights from all the game's hottest artists, and, recently, a few movers and shakers on the business end. Now, we are proud to introduce the newest addition to our interview arsenal. For the first installment of In The Mix, a new series in which we'll take an up-close-and-personal look at some of the most noteworthy up-and-coming talents in the industry, we shine the spotlight on Corneille, the Québécois soul singer who made his Booth debut with the reader-acclaimed "Liberation." Described as a fusion of Sting, Seal, and John Legend, the Montreal native has already achieved tremendous success in his home country, as well as across Europe and Africa, selling out countless concerts on the strength of several acclaimed LPs in his native tongue. With the March 10th release of English-language album The Birth of Cornelius via Universal Motown, he's given US audiences their first taste of his unique take on R&B. In this exclusive, five-question interview, Corneille gives his thoughts on his stateside success thus far, and reveals a few of his biggest musical influences.

Your newest album, The Birth of Cornelius, was recently released in the US. What type of response has it received?

I've had great feedback so far!

Music is one of a few internationally-recognized languages; what challenges have you faced breaking records in our biggest markets (New York, LA, Chicago)?

I haven't broken any records yet, I'll let you know when I do!

You have achieved great successes in the music business, selling millions of albums overseas. What are your domestic expectations for this album?

It's hard to say what realistic sales expectations can be in this economy so numbers are hardly any clear indication of music's true value today, but I certainly hope that mine will find its audience in America as it has in the past in other countries.

If you could choose two fellow R&B artists to tour the world with, who would you choose and why?

First, Babyface, because of his work as a recording artist but also as a songwriter/producer who has been an important influence on my art. I also aspire at the balance between both facets of his career. Plus, I think there's a chance his audience is not the kind that would boo me off stage! My second choice would be Stevie Wonder.

You get an invitation to join any women in the world inside our private DJ Booth; who gets the phone call?

Easy...calling my pretty wife for sure.
