Download DJBooth's new App, The PLUG Although SMIRNOFF’s Master of The Mix is a DJ competition, testing the nations best scratches and turntablists, it would be silly to think in today’s day and age that a DJ should only spin. As with so many legendary DJs, from A-Trak to Z-Trip, you have to be able to spin and produce if you want to make you name known, which is why the semi-final, “Remix” challenge tested the remaining contestants (including our favorite, Chris Karns) ability to put their own touch on a remix of Estelle’s Do My Thing; the one who doesn’t do their thing gets sent packing.

Considering he has won d**n near every competition thus far, there is no question Chris’ DJ skills, but even he would admit that producing isn’t his strong suit. So while the competitors were crafting their remixes with their own, personal engineers to help. While Jayceeoh, Loczi, and Incrediboi seemed to have the creative wheels churning, Chris looked like he was having a little trouble finding a direction. Once he found something to run with - incorporating a classic Marvin Gaye cut - the remix seemed to fall into place. Chris explained exactly what he did with the Marvin classic, “I just chopped it up, and sped it up, and tried to put some filters on it and turn it into a completely different feel.” Sounds good to me. After a surprise visit from Estelle, where she previewed their efforts, Chris and the remaining DJs were ready to take to the club to compete for a spot in the final challenge.

Master of the Mix

While each DJ impressed the judges and got the seal of approval from Estelle, the best was saved for last, when Chris took to the boards as the last (but not least) DJ to spin. After kicking off the set with the Marvin Gaye sample, Karns gave Do My Thing a drum-and-bass makeover by double-timing the beat and implementing some slick scratching and masterful work on the mixer. The highlight of the performance came when Chris made his own drum beat on the mixer, leaving Estelle baffled and in awe of his effort. Although Chris is not a producer, he might have a future in that route; Judge Mia Moretti called his set the “perfect marriage of turntablism and production.” While Chris’ performance was stellar, so to were the other DJs performances, each having a unique spin on Estelle’s single. While Chris didn’t win the challenge outright (the nod went to Jayceeoh) he did get a spot in the finals, which, was the real win..

While the NBA is reaching the end, so too is Master Of The Mix. The only difference? While the NBA Finals have a team full of floppers and an offense more boring than watching paint dry. On the other hand, SMIRNOFF’s Master of The Mix has three top notch DJs competing for the championship title and…oh yeah….a quarter of a million dollars. If you are behind, be sure to catch up by streaming the episodes on VH1.com before the finale next week on Monday night at 12 midnight EST. I you simply cant wait, be sure to check out all the behind the scenes features MOTM has to offer, including this video where Chris discusses being in the finals.
