Knitting Factory Holds G.O.O.D. Music All-Star Showcase [Exclusive Coverage]

Posted 7 years ago by
New York, NY -- The star-studded affair that was The Knitting Factory’s G.O.O.D Music takeover on Tuesday held a plethora of surprises, as Kanye West and Q-Tip joined Consequence, KiD CuDi and Big Sean on stage for a mix of past and soon-to-be Grammy Award-winners.

88 Keys, the first performer of the night, prepared the crowd by dropping hints of a surprise guest, announcing that someone would join him on stage for “Stay Up (Viagra),” eventually donning a Kanye costume consisting of flashy “Stronger” Max Headroom shades as he performed the Yeezy-assisted track off of his forthcoming debut album The Death of Adam.

Termanology followed, and was warmly received by the eager crowd, perhaps because the master of ceremonies, Statik Selektah, announced that they would only be playing DJ Premier tracks for the audience. After G-Unit Radio’s first lady Jen the Pen announced “I don’t think Kanye West is going to make it; sorry, guys,” it became clear that there would be a few rabbits popping out of the G.O.O.D. Music hat.

Mickey Factz was next up. His swagger was intact, with a motorcycle helmet, a live band and his dance moves and singing voice in tow. Though hecklers in the audience yelled “Lupe Fiasco!” he didn’t let it ruin his set, and after performing new hits like “Pick Up The Bass,” and “Automatic,” (off of The Leak Pt. 2) he said, slyly, “Lupe Fiasco is my evil older brother.” Detroit’s own Big Sean brought all of the classic Kanye-isms to the stage with “Getcha Some,” “Supa Dupa” and “A Million Dollars,” and KiD CuDi's “CuDi Spazzin” prepared the audience for the surprise to come, as devotees went wild when he dropped his freestyle over “Paper Planes.”

Consequence, the headliner of the night, held it down with his guest appearances, but his song choices were what made him the man of the hour. He performed “Disperse,” “Gone” and his new banger, “Mr. Popularity.”

By the time Kanye appeared, it wasn’t much of a “surprise,” (he had peeked out during KiD CuDi’s set, and hints had been dropped all night). Noticing the feverish flickers of digital and cell-phone cameras that snapped the second that he emerged, he immediately launched into “Flashing Lights.” The megastar performed the “Put On (Remix),” which followed with Consequence putting the audience on to Kanye’s upcoming album, segueing into “Swagger Like Us,” before Con's cousin Q-Tip made his way onto the stage for a memorable performance of “Stressed Out,” from A Tribe Called Quest’s Beats, Rhymes and Life.

It was pure pandemonium when Q-Tip went into “Getting Up” and “Award Tour,” and the night ended beautifully when everyone collaborated for a performance of “Grammy Family.” It encapsulated what some of the best new-age and old school artists can do, when they come together on the same stage to show a crowd what G.O.O.D music is all about.
