Download DJBooth's new App, The PLUG Lyfe Jennings, the famously raspy-voiced R&B singer, has released three albums since 2004. His debut album 268-192 remains a classic in the eyes of many, and his follow-ups did not disappoint. However, all things must come to an end; Lyfe Jennings is expected to retire after his latest album entitled I Still Believe. While his career was relatively short, and he will leave an immense desire from fans all over for a comeback. While we followed him right out of jail with 268-192, or with redemption from the fire in The Phoenix, it seems he's saved his greatest gem for his final project.

I Still Believe is a cohesive, congruent, and concise collection of tracks that displays personality through music in its truest sense. Jennings manages to communicate true themes in his life through his music in a way most artists cannot. The project, entirely written by Jennings himself, shines with each track notably: It Coulda Been Worse, Spotlight, Mama, I Still Believe, Learn From This and If I Knew Then What I Knew Now.

Spotlight, produced by T-Minus, a Canadian producer, who laced the project with four fantastic beats, has a sexy vibe to it which is sure to entice female fans everywhere. It Coulda Been Worse has an air of positivity and a hook to move even the hardest soul. Produced by Jennings, Worse displays his ability to relay life material through his songs. As he says, “I’m good at [giving] information”.

I Still Believe is different from his other projects in his lack of actual “writing” for this project. Jennings went into the studio and laid each verse freestyle. When discussing the difference in the two styles, he notes that when he writes he “always proofread. Did it make sense [to me]?”. On the other hand, freestyling allows him to “do things by accident that never would’ve done if structured it”.

Whether it is on paper or spoken freely from the consciousness, the fact is that I Still Believe is a welcomed parting gift from Jennings at the end of his career. With other tracks such as Mama (which features Anthony Hamilton), and his current single Statistcs, I Still Believe sounds like an album of great proportions, maybe even the best R&B album of the year. It is bitter sweet though, as this final output is only going to make fans yearn for more of Jennings unique voice. I Still Believe drops August 31 on Warner Bros.

After the listening session, I sat down with Lyfe for an exclusive interview to discuss his past, future and, of course, the ins and outs of "I Still Believe".
