Meet Caitlyn Scarlett

We've had a steady run of rap related "Meet" pieces, which is a rarity. We listen to hip-hop all day every day so I'd much rather change it up and show y'all something new. Still, when a rapper comes along, I'm not gonna not share it. Don't worry (or worry depending on whether or not you like my picks) this weeks Meet is not a rapper (but I figure she will be working with one or two of 'em pretty soon). I generally don't give a shit about popularity, I mean I'll try and pick something off the radar, but what ever I'm listening to at the time is probably what will get picked whether it's on the radio or it has 200 YouTube views.

Getting back to the "Meet" root this week's artist is both non-hip-hop and relatively obscure...but she won't be for long. RefinedHype Nation, meet Caitlyn Scarlett.

I hoped you liked "Bad Love" because currently, it's the only recorded, original effort I can find from her. I'd love to show you a project or seven, but there just isn't one; still this effort is dope enough to stand alone (although I pray something is in the works).

Before we get into the song though, a little info about Caitlyn. She is 18, hails from the UK and has a crippling Candy Crush addiction. As for hip-hop ties, she has a song with a rapper (but it is more EDM than hip-hop) and her twitter bio reads "this is how we chill from 95 'til" so she gets props in my book. She may not have any rapper ties now, but I can't imagine it will be long before they are busting down the door to her studio. These R&B/new wave/electronic singers are a growing trend (see Jhene Aiko and SZA) and Scarlett's voice is mature well beyond her years. She sounds like a solidified, powerful pop star on "Bad Love". I'm amazed at how gripping and almost haunting her vocals are. She has this smoky vibe to her voice, but she still has enough power as not to get overwhelmed by the dope electronic based production. I have been listening to a lot of SZA, but sometimes it gets a little boring to me; I need something with the energy and vibe of "Bad Love" to keep me interested and while SZA is dope in her own right, she doesn't have that blow you away factor that Scarlett shows on her one and only single.

Normally, I would wait until there was more to work with, but "Bad Love" was just too good not to share. Honestly, I don't really need much more to know she is the real motherfucking deal. I don't mean to brag, but I'm kind of good at this (I do work for a music blog after all) and I'm already convinced when it comes to Scarlett. I have replayed it about 20 times now and I don't even realize I am doing it; sneakily catchy. Plus, I wanted to get on the bandwagon now, so I can look cool in 5 years when she is topping charts and you can impress your friends. So no other "official" songs, but with an EP on the way, I certainly expect to hear more. I will be sure to let y'all know when Jurassic Juke Box and Other Drugs drops, but you can expect it later this month.
