Amy Winehouse - Halftime

Lioness: Hidden Treasures

Posthumous albums can be complicated affairs. Often the artist never intended the tracks to be released at all, or at least not in that form, so what are fans to do? Are we really honoring a recently departed artist by listening to tracks that are less than their best? Luckily there’s been no such complications for Amy Winehouse: be it Our Day Will Come or Like Smoke, everything we’ve heard from Winehouse following her tragic death has been greeted by nearly unanimously positive reviews. Something tells me that trend will continue with new single Halftime. Long time production partner Salaam Remi keeps things sweet and simple, laying only some soft percussion and keys over an acoustic guitar line, resulting in one of the more neo-soul-esque beats we’ve ever heard Amy on. Vocally, Winehouse doesn’t sing in in the heartbroken style that made her a legend, but it turns out that she can more than match the beat for simple sweetness. Will The Lioness: Hidden Treasures end up on the right side of the posthumous album spectrum when it’s released on December 6? So far, thankfully, all signs point to yes.
