Angel Haze - Cleaning Out My Closet

Posted 3 years ago
Producer:
Eminem and Jeff Bass
Album:

It took courage to do what Eminem did on 2002 single Cleanin’ Out My Closet and open up about such painful issues as his abandonment by his father, the bad blood between him and his mother, and his tumultuous relationship with his ex-wife. A word like “brave,” however doesn’t even begin to describe Angel Haze‘s freestyled remake of the record, which finds the Northeastern emcee grappling with a subject that’s rarely broached in rap—except when artists like Slim Shady himself are using it as a punchline. After a very well-warranted “parental discretion” warning, the NYC resident proceeds to graphically recount her repeated sexual assaults at the hands of a family member, and the devastating psychological fallout that reverberated through much of her life. On the back, Haze reminds us that living well is the best revenge, and encourages those in similar situations to turn their trauma into the beginning of a success story. Fans will be able to find this powerful cut and much more on Classick, Angel’s forthcoming mixtape due out on October 25. In the meantime, fans can still cop her last project, July’s Reservation, for free in The DJBooth.
