Like the Ark of the Covenant, the latest feature from Grow Up duo Apex contains things that man simply wasn’t meant to know – be warned: nothing can prepare those who click “play” for what lies inside. All right, all right; you probably don’t have to worry about Get Ready melting your face off but, still, listeners may be surprised by the lyrical freshness Aris and Pre-Sense deliver over beatsmith Ulliversal‘s unsettling mix of reversed strings (I think) and boom-bap percussion. Though both rise to the occasion with bars brimming with braggadocio and aggressive trash-talk, Pre-Sence takes home the award for most audacious (and possibly blasphemous) boasts, lacing his closing verse with some hard-hitting Biblical rhetoric: “This city is my altar, break bread with the squad / Eucharistic, this is just food for thought… Apex rap the New Age Testament, open your Bible.” Craving more? You’re in luck – the Northeastern hopefuls’ latest full-length, Struggle City, dropped in December ‘09 and is available now from record stores and online retailers.
