Patience is all well and good, but it takes more than a knack for waiting in line to make it to the top: you’ve also gotta be Hungry enough to stay on your grind while everyone else is snoozing. Having friends in high places certainly doesn’t hurt, either. As evidenced by this album cut, Apollo Brown has both of the aforementioned bases covered and then some – here, the Detroit beatsmith serves up a soulfully gritty, horn-laced instrumental as two underground cohorts give us a braggadocio-laced lesson on the value of of hard work and perseverance. Little Brother‘s Rapper Big Pooh is first on the mic, blazing the track with motivational quotables (“It’s only from the bottom that you learn to ascend”) and Motown mainstay Black Milk turns in an equally inspiring performance on the back end, emphasizing his willingness to “put it all on the line like laundry” in pursuit of musical excellence (and, of course, the Almighty Dollar). Has this tasty snack whet your appetite for more fresh underground tunes? Look no further than Apollo Brown’s The Reset LP, available now in stores and online.
