Avriel - Prelude

None (Promo Single)

When a new literary talent climbs to the top of the bestseller list, it’s only a matter of time before avid fans start to write their own stories about the characters they’ve created. Guess that rule also holds true in the music game; on her latest single, unsigned singer/songwriter Avriel takes inspiration from Keisha, the young woman whose struggles Kendrick Lamar described on Keisha’s Song (Her Evils) and Sing About Me, I’m Dying of Thirst. On Prelude, Miles Native‘s understated, sample-laced electronic boardwork backs the singer as she fleshes out the character’s traumatic backstory, vividly illuminating the “cycle of abuse and neglect” that destroys black women’s lives and drags down the community as a whole. This insightful cut isn’t part of a larger project, but those feeling it are encouraged to check out Avriel’s last feature, the equally thought-provoking Failed Messiah.
