Bambu - Lean

...One Rifle Per Family

Los Angeles emcee Bambu is a lot like Mary Poppins—except, instead of offering the youngsters a spoonful of sugar to help the medicine go down, he’s using a spoonful of “medicine” to make his hard-left political critiques more palatable to hip-hop heads. New single Lean, for instance, might sound like an ode to sizzurp—thanks in part to Karman‘s slow-rolling beat, which features a prominent sample from Redman‘s Tonight’s Da Night—but the emcee’s more interested in discussing the internal contradictions and cleavages that create the potential for societal shifts: “Purple codeine is not what I ‘m meanin’ when I’m leanin’ / The balance of power is not balanced, it’s tilted: leanin’.” Bambu, Leo Docuyanan and Tony Rain link up to direct the joint’s freshly-minted visuals. Like what you’re hearing? More hot beats and revolutionary rhetoric await on ...One Rifle Per Family, available now for purchase on iTunes.
