“Respect for women” is a little more nuanced than not saying “b*tch” all the time – in fact, it can be incredibly complex, as anyone who’s read a line or two of feminist theory is well aware. On newly-leaked EP inclusion The Queen Is Dead, Los Angeles native Bambu takes a surprisingly deep look at hip-hop’s attitude on the subject of gender, railing against rappers who worship women in their music while treating them like trash in real life, and even pondering whether putting females on a pedestal is its own form of objectification. The lyrical insights the underground emcee delivers over Fat Gums’ smooth, sampled beat are as ear-pleasing as they are on-point, and the result should get listeners heads nodding and thinking (don’t hurt yourselves). For more, check out Bambu’s creatively-punctuated ...paper cuts… EP, scheduled to drop February 2.
