Basic Vocab - Prescription

Posted 6 years ago
Producer:
Tony Galvin
Album:
A Better Way

Ever since the 1914 passage of the Harrison Narcotics Tax Act, it’s been illegal for physicians to prescribe narcotics for the purpose of maintaining a patient’s addiction. Fortunately, music is not a controlled substance, and thus Basic Vocab are free to write hip-hop fiends a Prescription for fresh beats and rhymes. On the second leak off the Miami trio’s forthcoming sophomore set (and the group’s first Booth feature), a soulfully mellow chopped-sample instrumental by Tony Galvin (the beatsmith behind tracks like Trina‘s Baddest B*tch and Trick Daddy‘s Shut Up) sets the stage for far-from-basic bars by emcees J.L. Sorrell and Mental Growth, who lace the track with a powerfully therapeutic blend of wordplay and wistful optimism. The record ends with a sentiment that just about all of us should be able to get behind: “I hope for the state of the game, new generations speak the truth and it remains the same.” Those craving more new tunes from Basic Vocab can pick up a refill in April, when A Better Way hits record stores and online retailers.
