Black Milk - Dismal

Album:

If “bad” means “good” in the hip-hop lexicon, then it stands to reason that something described as “Dismal” would actually be f**king fantastic… right? At the very least, my hypothesis holds true with regard to Black Milk‘s latest feature. Following Sunday’s Best / Monday’s Worst and Perfected on Puritan Ave, this newly-released single goes in a considerably grimier direction than its predecessors. The Motown mainstay sets a tense mood behind the boards, layering ghostly synth wails and submerged samples over an atonal bassline. His edgy, ambivalent verses, which depict a fallen hustler’s dialogue with his conscience, amplify the record’s disorienting effect. If you’re feeling this claustrophobic cut, you can expect more innovative beats and rhymes on Black Milk’s No Poison No Paradise LP, set to hit record stores and online retailers October 15.
