When you want to, say, build a bridge that won’t rust and fall apart, you use steel – an alloy of iron and carbon much more durable than either of its component parts. Similarly, when you’re looking to strike a balance of lyrical impact and smoothness conducive to maximum Chillaxation, you reach for Bop Alloy, an up-and-coming duo consisting of Baltimore rapper Substantial (previously heard on The W.W.K.Y.A. Tour) and beatsmith Marcus D.. The twosome’s collaborative Booth debut is a blissfully relaxing affair, with the Washingtonian producer serving up a shimmering, sax-driven backdrop (I feel like I should recognize that sample – anyone?) for his partner’s mellow mic work. Despite delivering his bars in a suave, downright soothing flow, Sub drops more than his fair share of blistering lines: “You’re hanging on every syllable, word, phrase and sentence / So cold, you should change my name to cryogenics” As Gucci Mane would say, “Brrr!” If you like what you’re hearing, more refreshingly chill hip-hop goodness awaits on Bop Alloy’s self-titled debut full-length, released in September and out now online.
