Charlie Smarts - Tony Robbins

Posted 5 years ago
Producer:
Marshall Law
Album:
LowBottomMe

Hip-hop has seen some unlikely homages over the years – Laws’ recent Paul McCartney tribute album and Lil B’s infamous ode to Ellen Degeneres come to mind – but until someone shows me different, I’m going to assume that Charlie Smarts has just unleashed the first Tony Robbins reference in rap history.  Whether the Kooley High member is a devotee of the motivation guru or not, Robbins (both the person and song) clearly have Smarts feeling inspired. Producer Marshall Law uses an unidentified soul sample and a booming bass line to get heads moving (bonus points for the beatboxing), a foundation that back up Smarts’ always lyrically flexible musings which, in addition to Mr. Robbins, contains references to Richard Simmons, Chubby Checker and, most deliciously, Hot Pockets. If Robbins has you wanting to improve yourself, or at least your hip-hop collection, be sure to check out Smarts’ upcoming solo project, LowBottomMe, and those in the NC area can see the man in action at Kooley High’s upcoming show in Raleigh this weekend (6/24). It’s all there for the taking, just help yourself.
