In spite of some fans’ wishes that they’d stay shifty-eyed hustlers forever, the Clipse spent much of their latest full-length kicking back and enjoying the finer things in life. And why not? As the brothers Thornton remind us on new single Champion, they’ve got plenty of reasons to celebrate. First to flow over The Neptunes’ swanky, club-ready synth arpeggios and syncopated percussion, Malice pours himself a glass of fine wine and exults, “Overcame the odds, so we overdo them cars/ We done balled around the world, now we’re reaching for the stars.” On the back end, Pusha T gets a little philosophical, giving thanks for his life and his freedom as well as touching upon the simple pleasures of domesticity: “Life is with your kids, watchin’ Madagascar…” Is the new, more ‘grown’ attitude the Clipse showcase here a step in the right direction? As always, I’ll let Booth readers have the final say. Either way, fans can hear more on Til the Casket Drops, available now from record stores and online retailers.
