Daryn Alexus - Iniquity

Posted 4 years ago
Producer:
Dee Lilly
Album:
Vintage Heart. Modern Love.

Don’t let the turquoise lipstick she’s rocking in her artist pic fool you. While Daryn Alexus is just as artistically unconventional as her cosmetic choices suggest, the singer’s first Booth feature finds her showcasing a style that’s dark, complex and subtle. A newly-released standout off the singer’s latest street release, Iniquity is an expressionistic ballad detailing the fatal consequences of an abusive relationship (At least, that’s my reading.). Dee Lilly handles production duties, layering moody piano chords and choral synths over an ominous rhythm section as the Windy City songstress delivers verses drenched with fear and longing. It all leads up to a vivid, if cryptic climax: “Finding space for opportunity / One for the other, or both / Printed identities, sirens approaching / Just pull the trigger.” Intrigued by this unsigned buzzmaker’s bracing take on R&B? Of course you are. Lucky for you, more fresh tunes are just a few mouse-clicks away; released earlier this month, Daryn Alexus’ Vintage Heart. Modern Love. EP is available now for free download.
