In today’s era of user-friendly production software like Reason and FruityLoops, it seems like anyone with a laptop and ten free minutes can make a halfway decent hip-hop beat. The use of drum kits, mixers, and other hardware is declining, as young musicians become more and more tuned in to the digital world. Unfortunately, one of hip-hop’s foundations, the art of sampling, is slowly starting to fade into the past. DJ K.O., a rising producer out of New Jersey, refuses to let it go without a fight. In his new single, Someday, he extensively samples soul pioneer Donny Hathaway’s 1973 hit, Someday We’ll All Be Free. Rappers Talib Kweli, Torae, and John Robinson all jump on for guest verses, while singer Tiffany Paige handles the hook. Someday will appear on K.O.’s first full length album, Picture This (out September 23).
