The Blaqkout LP

Cali legends DJ Quik & Kurupt are known for repping the West, but Hey Playa, the lead single off their forthcoming collaborative LP, finds the duo in a different “West” than listeners may expect: here, the twosome take a trip down to the Western Sahara, and party all night to the sweet sounds of Moroccan Blues.  Quik’s unique, body-moving beat, complete with a suitably exotic sample (taken from an episode of Andrew Zimmerman’s Bizarre Foods), sets the stage as he and his Dogg Pound partner-in-rhyme pass the mic back and forth, spitting dreamy descriptions of festival days and revelry-filled nights. In contrast to Kurupt‘s carefree lyrical presence, Quik ends the record on a foreboding note (“[I’ll] remove you from who you love, I’ll keep you trapped in your mind”) but, hey, even the friendliest locales have their dark sides.  Catchy, energetic, and just a tad spooky, Hey Playa is sure to raise anticipation for The Blaqkout LP, set to drop June 9th.
