When we first met Doey Rock way back in January of ‘08, he was a hard-nosed hustler with a stark Hyphy sound. Well, an artist can grow, change and diversify quite a bit in two and a half years and, judging by new single Sunset Strip, this L.A. native has done just that. Backed by producer BT‘s nostalgic, harp-sampled instrumental, Rock paints a vivid lyrical portrait of a rocky relationship, lamenting, “I say I’ve got the road map to life, but you won’t follow my direction / I don’t listen, we fight, you go left, I go right.” The headliner’s skills are impossible to ignore – which is saying a lot, considering his bars follow those of a bona fide legend: Wu-Tang member Raekwon the Chef cooks up a guest verse precisely as fresh as you’d expect, lacing the front end with deadpan, stylized, but emotionally involving narrative rhymes. If this bittersweet banger leaves you convinced you need more of Doey Rock’s brand of musical sunshine in your life, you’re in luck; the West Coaster’s Mind Candy Re-Wrapped re-release dropped today, and is available now in stores and online.
