Drekidd - Hometown Glory
Thanks to the efforts of various underground emcees, the West Coast is in the process of re-emerging as as one of the U.S.’ foremost hip-hop hotspots. Though some (Nipsey Hussle, Jay Rock, Noah Jones...) are looking to repopularize the G-funk/lowrider style that laid the foundation for Cali hip-hop’s emergence onto the national scene, others, like Tyga, Raje’, and Crooked I, come with a more classic, concentrated independent style. A member of the latter category, Inglewood native/Booth newcomer Drekkid waxes poetic about his city’s legacy of greatness on mixtape leak Hometown Glory, promising to do his Left Coast forebears proud. Nothing says “motivational anthem” quite like a high-powered beat featuring a soulful sample, and True Connoisseurs alumnus Sergio “Heart Beat” Molina rises to the occasion, supplementing his sweeping piano-string boardwork with a snippet from British singer Adele‘s record of the same name. The Fix drops October 1st—if the rest of the project delivers on this track’s promise, Dre will likely become the latest SoCal rapper to join the ranks of Booth mainstays.
