James Blake has been getting a lot of attention in the Booth lately, despite not having a solo feature to his name. January’s Retro-Wilheim saw Alex Isley cover not one but two songs by the British recording artist and producer, and now UK pop songstress Ellie Goulding has linked up with rising rap star Angel Haze to rework Life Round Here, a cut off his 2013 sophomore set. Blake’s crisp, hip hop-infused beat gets an understated makeover courtesy of Noah Breakfast; his reverb-drenched synths and ghostly vocal effects support the Hanging On singer as she skillfully renders the record’s melancholy verses. Haze steps into the spotlight on the back, airing out her psyche in a verse that’s both technically adept and fraught with emotion. For the original version of Life Round Here and much more, cop James Blake’s Overgrown LP, out as of April. Angel Haze’s major-label debut album, Dirty Gold, dropped in December and is available now online.
