Gallant - Manhattan
On his last Booth feature, EP single Sirens, Los Angeles buzzmaker Gallant‘s ethereal alt-R&B sound expanded to include subtle hip-hop and trap influences. With follow-up Manhattan, he and his constant behind-the-boards collaborator, Felix Snow, take a more stripped-down, minimal approach. In place of the aforementioned jam’s clattering hi-hats and pitched-down hook vocals, the beatsmith serves up a barely-there rhythm section accompanied by delayed guitar arpeggios and angelic synth harmonies. Through the omnipresent layer of reverb, Gallant croons oblique lyrics peppered with references to outdated audiovisual technology—VCRs, cassette tapes and even Super 8 cameras get shout-outs. Feeling it? Gallant’s Zebra EP still lacks a drop date, but we’ll keep you supplied with the latest singles and release details leading up to its eventual arrival.
