Heat Writer II The FreEP

More than five years after the beatsmith’s untimely death, artists and producers alike are still toasting the memory of J. Dilla. The latest emcee to enter his name into the figurative guestbook, Booth newcomer HaLo (aka Ben Ready) and a few of his most talented homies pay their respects to the hip-hop legend on newly-leaked EP cut Plan B. Flowing over the vintage jazz samples and boom-bap percussion of Little Brother alum 9th Wonder, the North Carolina representative drops braggadocio-packed bars calibrated to please even the hardest-core lyrical heads. Following the headliner up with some lyrical flames of their own are Missouri native TP, who laces the middle verse with laid-back punchlines, and Brooklyn phenom Skyzoo, who reminds us why his penmanship is some of the game’s finest in a brainy closing verse (“AP English, f*ck writing in layman’s!”) Have these underground rhymesayers done their production idol proud? I think I know the answer but, as always, you get the final say. For more, check out Heat Writer II The FreEP when it hits our homepage for free streaming and download February 1.
