Ice Cube ft. Doughboy & OMG - She Coudn’t Make It on Her Own

I Am the West

When you see the name Ice Cube, a few things come to mind: hard, gutter, intellectual, street, etc. And for good reason; even in his 40s the legendary west coast emcee still seems as pissed off as ever, especially with this old vs. new west civil war brewing. However, all of this anger feels misplaced on his latest street single, She Coudn’t Make It on Her Own. Produced by Bangladesh, one might think the instrumental would be a strong point. Disappointingly, it proves to be the weakest part of the jam as the pedestrian beat proves to be hard for Ice Cube to mesh with. Let’s put it this way, if you heard the chorus of the song, the last person you would think of is the N.W.A. founding father. Maybe that’s why guest rappers Doughboy and OMG are featured, though their verses aren’t enough to lift this into elite territory. The track as a whole isn’t completely terrible, die-hard Cube fans will likely feel disappointed. Or is it just me? Cube’s new album, I Am the West, is due out September 28, hopefully with more killa and less filla.
