A message to all emcees: If you plan on sampling Rakim, you must come correct. Should you need an example, look no further than Kick A Hole, the latest single from ICON. On the emcee’s first Booth feature since Find A Way, the Cali native returns to pay homage to the aforementioned rap legend. Atop the energetic, alarm riddled beat from producer Ruffsound, ICON does Rakim justice, spitting with ease and delivering each line with power and confidence. Rakim’s influence is felt far beyond the title of the song, though, as Ruffsound speeds up the famous line, “kick a hole in the speaker, pull the plug, then jet”, using it as the song’s hook. Kick A Hole is not (yet) attached to anything larger, but keep it locked to The DJBooth for more. And if by chance you unfamiliar with Rakim, we recommend that you get your Google on.
