Illus ft. Gift Of Gab & Paul Dateh - Better
It’s one of the oldest clichés in the book (even older than the “oldest [blank] in the book” cliché), but it’s true: however bad you’ve got it, there’s someone out there worse off. For a vivid reminder, we turn to Illus, a Conn. buzzmaker whose Booth debut tells the stories of three individuals who emerged from profound adversity determined to create Better lives for themselves and those around them. Over JJ Brown‘s understated bass-sample beat, the artist introduces us to James Bain, a man who served 35 years in prison before being proven innocent through DNA testing, and an unnamed 11-year-old girl kidnapped and forced into prostitution for two months before finally being rescued by the police. Gift of Gab guests on the middle, spitting about a friend who left behind a life of crime to become a successful entrepreneur and an engaged member of his community. Complete with a smooth hook by Paul Dateh, this insightful jam should leave even the staunchest pessimists suffused with an attitude of gratitude. If you’re feeling generous, why not make a donation to help the-falsely accused start new lives and/or fight human trafficking? Oh, and keep it locked for all the latest on Illus’ latest LP, For Adam.
