J. Cole - Premeditated Murder

These days rappers take one of two approaches: either they deliberately flood the market, or take their time and make it seem like every new track is an event all on its own. J. Cole‘s taken the second approach as he’s risen through rap’s ranks, especially on Premeditated Murder, a self-produced solemn testimony to his pending greatness. Murder’s eye-opening lyrics, along with a slow drum pattern and Cole’s harmonizing on the chorus make this track eerie, yet poignant. On the mic Cole examines the difference between the old him and the new one: the old one who couldn’t afford anything off the McDonald’s Dollar Menu, and the new one who swears the songs made in his bedroom created some leg room for a new car. It’s this type of raw emotion and honesty that’ll create an even bigger fanbase than the rabid one the XXL Freshman already has, and make his currently untitled debut album (which Premeditated will presumably be on, though it has yet to be officially confirmed) even more anticipated by hip-hop heads than any other this year.
