Jay Z - Girls, Girls, Girls

Posted 2 years ago
Producer:
Just Blaze
Album:
The Blueprint

Twelve years ago yesterday, Jay Z released an album that would, true to its title, became The Blueprint for hip-hop in the early 2000s. Since we’ve already shined the Throwback Thursday spotlight on seminal second single Izzo (H.O.V.A.), we decided to celebrate the historic set’s birthday by featuring the equally classic follow-up. Even moreso than for its commercial success (the cut reached #17 on the Hot 100), Girls, Girls, Girls is notable for the wave of imitators it inspired. Though the punchline-packed catalog of sexual conquests has practically become a subgenre unto itself, Jigga’s cut remains the gold standard, thanks to the rapper’s suave wit as well as Just Blaze‘s supernaturally smooth production (sampled from Tom Brock’s There’s Nothing In This World That Can Stop Me From Loving You). The cut even packs backing vocals by rap icons Biz Markie, Q-Tip and Slick Rick. The theme of celebrity cameos extends to the official video, which boasts appearances from Carmen Electra, Paula Jai Parker and Tamala Jones.
