Jimmy Powers - Same James

Posted 6 years ago
Producer:
LONEgevity
Album:
Cali-Foreigner

While it hasn’t been all that long since Jimmy Powers introduced himself to Booth readers with mixtape cut Classless, those who dug the hip-hop purist’s first feature should nonetheless be relieved to hear that the California up-and-comer hasn’t changed one bit in the weeks since – as he explains on this new single, he’s the Same James we met back in early April. Backed by the gritty-but-smooth boardwork of beatsmith LONEgevity, who samples Bettye LaVette’s soul classic, Let Me Down Easy, Powers lists off the many ways in which he’s the same as he ever was, from the deeply personal (“Still insecure, still want what I can’t have, still need to repair my relations with my dad.”) to the simply eccentric (“Still got more cologne than Fabio does.). Above all, it’s clear that the emcee is still and always will be one-hundred percent devoted to classic hip-hop – a stance that’s sure to earn him fans among underground heads in the Booth. This retro-informed joint and much more can be found on Powers’ Cali-Foreigner LP, out now in stores and online.
