12 Years A Slave Soundtrack

A standout off the soundtrack to Django Unchained, John Legend‘s Who Did That to You? epitomized the drama’s dusty, Spaghetti Western-inspired vibe. 12 Years a Slave, Steve McQueen’s newly-released adaptation of Solomon Northrupp’s 1853 slave memoir of the same name, also features new music from the G.O.O.D. Music singer/songwriter, but his contribution is as different in tone from the aforementioned cut as the two films are from one another. Legend’s interpretation of the classic spiritual Roll, Jordan Roll is minimal and haunting, accompanied only by simple backing harmonies and a thin layer of reverb. Listeners will be able to find this poignant selection on the official 12 Years a Slave soundtrack LP, pre-orderable now in anticipation of its November 11, arrival on record store shelves. For more from Legend, check out his recently-released senior set, Love in the Future.
