Despite all the changes that hip-hop has gone through over the years, the art of sampling has never left the music. Heck, Jermaine Dupri and Diddy made careers out of sampling and re-inventing songs (see Dirty Money’s Angels for recent proof). What has become a rarity, however, is the complete re-make of a song; apart from that We Are the World tomfoolery. Luckily, Levi’s Pioneer Sessions series is changing all that. Following previous offerings like Nas’ remake of Slick Rick’s Hey Young World and Raphael Saadiq’s It’s a Shame, today we proudly feature Our Generation by newfound collaborators John Legend and The Roots (see Doin’ It Again and The Fire), a remake originally credited to the soulful Ernie Wells. In comparison, the updated version has crisper production thanks to The Roots superb skills and Legend’s emotional delivery, but the tracks still maintains the same inspiring essence as the original. In other words, it’s exactly the kind of song our generation needs to hear. Additionally, the record is also the first offering from The Roots and Legend’s upcoming collabo album, Wake-Up.
