Some call graffiti self-expression, others (cough, old people) consider it a scar on the urban environment, but there’s no denying the central role street art (legal and otherwise) has played in the development of hip-hop culture and aesthetics. On the latest single and first Booth feature from John Regan, the Baltimore up-and-comer looks back on his formative years as a young artist determined to Paint the World with just a few spray cans and a variety of caps. Over YZ‘s hypnotically fresh, headphone-ready instrumental, the rapper chronicles how he went from tagging “bathroom stalls… b-ball courts, old train cars and walls of all sorts” to, figuratively, making his mark on the world with rap as his canvas. PackFM, the Brooklynite who brought us Nasty back in April, holds things down on the guest tip, lending his rapped vocals to the hook and closing proceedings with a spoken-word outro. Those who enjoyed this nostalgic, retro-informed street banger should keep it locked for the latest on Regan’s debut studio album, Sorry I’m Late, set to hit record store shelves and online retailers “soon”
