The latest leaked track off UK soul sensation (and first-time Booth featuree) Joss Stone‘s sophomore set was originally written and circulated back in October of ‘08, in response to a government official who criticized the singer for speaking out against the poor treatment of Iraq War veterans. A year later, the war rages on and, needless to say, the criticisms leveled in Governmentalist are still quite relevant. Be that as it may, the album version of this record features one very exciting addition: no stranger to fiery political commentary, East Coast legend Nas steps up to the mic to spit a guest verse over Stone, Jonathan Shorten and Conner Reeves’ electric guitar-driven vintage-soul boardwork. Though the emcee gets a little off-topic, opining on genetically-modified food and the Kennedy assassination, his flow fits so well that it’s hard to care. If this retro-informed take on today’s global issues leaves you craving more new tunes from Joss Stone, you won’t have to wait long; Colour Me Free! drops tomorrow, the 20th.
