K. Sparks - The Cotton Club

Posted 4 years ago

Ready for a whirlwind history lesson, brought to you by Wikipedia? Good. Established in 1920 under the ownership of heavyweight boxer Jack Johnson (but taken over by bootlegger and gangster Owney Madden in ‘23), The Cotton Club was an epicenter of the Harlem Renaissance, hosting performances by the biggest names in jazz, as well as other prominent black entertainers. While K. Sparks’ first release of 2012 doesn’t directly reference the historic nightspot, Kurser’ headphone-ready sample work does indeed evoke the image of a smoky, Prohibition-era club, buzzing with the excitement of a thriving culture. On the lyrical tip, Spizzy keeps it poetic and witty as ever. In between poetic turns of phrase and clever barbs, the Queens repper reveals some exciting news: “Shout-out to my wife, baby due around in August.Double Up labelmate JAYVINE contributes some appetizing wordplay to the record’s back end: “Treat you like a dinner roll, butter to the biscuit / Young with the beef, only women get the brisket.” No doubt about it: 2012 is going to be a big year for K. Sparks. Details on the project this joint will be attached to have yet to be announced, but fans can, of course, keep it locked for the latest.
