K. Sparks ft. Eric Biddines & JAYVINE - 88 Chevy
Throughout the last couple decades of hip-hop, the opening bars of Hank Crawford’s Wildflower have been synonymous with introspective personal narrative: Johnny “J” flipped the record to back 2Pac‘s quasi-autobiographical Shawty Wanna Be a Thug, and Kanye used it as the canvas for his coming-of-age-story on Drive Slow. Today, K. Sparks carries on tradition with new promo single 88 Chevy. Hoodgrown Productions mans the mixing boards, offering a low-key yet driving take on the pensive sax-keyboard groove as Spizzy reflects on lessons learned during his time in the game to date: “I used to tell myself at 21 that I’d be famous / But sh*t done changed, I’m fighting time; so motherf**k the fame it’s an independent grind.” Eric Biddiness follows the Booth fave’s opener with a reedy, self-assured middle verse, and frequent Sparks collaborator JAYVINE closes the record with some poignant reflections on loss (including the untimely death of his own mother). 88 Chevy isn’t attached to any forthcoming project, but those feeling this understated banger can stay tuned for further fresh tunes from all involved.
