In Exodus 20:5, the Man Upstairs lets idol worshippers know that it’s not just they who will pay for their defiance: “I am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me.” That notion of justice sounds harsh and outdated to our ears but, as Kahali Oden points out on new single Sins of Our Fathers (a Booth-exclusive world premiere), it bears an uncanny resemblance to the vicious circle of struggle and crime that’s many poor African-American communities have been trapped in for decades. Here, a sampled beat by Hawaiian producer Kuahine backs the West Coast mainstay as he reflects on the “crab in a bucket” mentality that reigns supreme in the streets, and the disgrace of black-on-black violence. This is just one of many thought-provoking cuts to be found on Oden’s Planet Rocked street album, scheduled to drop digitally January 1, 2014.
