Don’t call it a comeback, he’s been here for years. After a hiatus from our pages following the 2011 release of Ol Time Killin Part II (Anywhere), Kardinal Offishall is back and ready to knock you and your mama out with new release, Kill Shot. The Toronto veteran’s (“not a”) comeback comes fueled by producer Nottz, who here goes back to the basics, combining a click-shot beat that would have sounded at home on Get Rich or Die Tryin with some spacey synths and occasional strings. Once again showcasing a lyricism that exceeds the expected, Kadrinal forgoes the aggressive formula most emcees would undoubtedly use on a beat like this and instead speaks on the complexities, and sometimes necessities, of violence: “I understand T.I.’s predicament / n**gas don’t think when they need money for rent / and the jobs ain’t hiring.” No doubt about it, it’s good to hear Offishall killing the mic once again, and I’ve got no doubt that more rap homicide awaits on he and Nottz’ collaborative, heavily acronymistic A.M.T.R.I.M (Allow Me To Re-Introduce Myself), hopefully arriving sooner rather than later.
