Artist: King Mez
Track: Winter
Producer: Harvard
Album: The Winter EP

During the frigid Minneapolis Winter, I’m much more apt to vibe out to bright, sunny tunes than seasonally-appropriate fare (anything Brazilian is a good bet). Fortunately, the title of North Carolina up-and-comer King Mez’ first Booth feature (and the EP which shares its name) is something of a misnomer – the 19-year-old emcee’s rhymes are plenty hot enough to make up for the cut’s chilly subject matter. Here, Harvard flips a sample from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Heads Will Roll into a chipmunk-indie (Chipster?) backdrop for Mez’ meditations on the artistic grind. Delivering his rhymes with slow-burning intensity, the emcee explains: “I could care less about compliments on my clothes, or how many people interpretin’ all my flows. I’m focused on my flaws and hopin’ that God knows…” Needless to say, that kind of singleminded determination will serve him well as he advances in the game. King Mez’ Winter LP is out now, and fans can also look forward to the first-quarter release of The Paraplegics, a collaborative project with producer Commissioner Gordon.
